If you are reading this, chances are you or your child is interested in appearing for the National Mathematics Talent Contest and you want to understand how the registration works. NMTC is organized every year by the Association of Mathematics Teachers of India, commonly known as AMTI, and it has been one of the most credible mathematics competitions in India since 1968. Before anything else, there is one thing you need to know — NMTC registration does not work like most other exams. You cannot register on your own. Everything goes through your school or college. Once that is clear, the rest of the process is actually quite simple.
National Mathematics Talent Contest (NMTC) is an Indian talent contest in mathematics held every year organized by the Association of Mathematics Teachers of India (AMTI). It is also a way through which students are able to put their problem solving abilities to the test and compete amongst others nationally. Students of Class 5 to undergraduate can participate in the contest where young minds get to show their brilliance in mathematics.
Its NMTC takes two stages:
The first step to entrance to such a prestigious contest is registration. Now, we should take a closer look at the procedure of NMTC registration.
AMTI has always kept the registration process institution-based, and there is a good reason for it. Schools and colleges act as the point of contact between students and AMTI. They verify student details, collect fees, and ensure that only currently enrolled students are participating. This keeps the process clean and organized at a national level. So if you want to appear in NMTC, your first step is not visiting a website it is walking up to your school and letting them know you want to participate.
Go to amtionline.com this is the only official portal for NMTC registration. Avoid any third-party websites. On the site, navigate to the NMTC section where you will find all registration-related documents and instructions for that year.
Your school needs to download two documents from the NMTC section of the website:
Both documents are available on amtionline.com and must be used in their original format — no changes to the file structure should be made.
The Data Consolidation Sheet and the Excel Name List need to be filled in accurately with the details of all students registering from that institution. Every student's information must be correct name, class, category, and other required details. Double-check everything before moving to the next step because errors can cause problems later.
While filling in the forms, make sure each student is registered under the correct category based on their current class:
| Category | Contest Name | Eligible Classes |
|---|---|---|
| Primary | Gauss Contest | Class 5 and 6 |
| Sub-Junior | Kaprekar Contest | Class 7 and 8 |
| Junior | Bhaskara Contest | Class 9 and 10 |
| Inter | Ramanujan Contest | Class 11 and 12 |
| Senior | Aryabhata Contest | Degree level students |
Registering under the wrong category is a common mistake make sure the class matches the category before submitting.
The registration fee is ₹150 per student. Payment is made online through NEFT, IMPS, or similar methods. Out of the total fee:
Make sure the payment is completed and the transaction details are saved before moving to the next step.
After the forms are filled and payment is complete, the institution needs to send an email to AMTI at support@amtionline.com. The email must include:
This is a step where many schools make a mistake sending documents in PDF format instead of Excel. AMTI only accepts Excel. Make sure the format is correct before hitting send.
After the email is submitted, AMTI processes the registration from their end. Make sure your school follows up if they do not receive any acknowledgement within a reasonable time. Once registration is confirmed, students should be informed. The certificate issued after the Preliminary Test doubles as the Hall Ticket for the Final Test, so it must be kept safely after Stage 1 results are out.
These are not just formalities these are the things that actually decide whether your registration goes through successfully or not.
Once registration is done, here is how the rest of the NMTC journey looks:
| Stage | When It Happens | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 – Preliminary Test | Every year in August | Held at your own school, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 2 hours |
| Stage 1 Results | First week of September | Top 10% qualify for the Final Test |
| Stage 2 – Final Test | Every year in October | 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, 3 hours, subjective paper |
| Stage 2 Results | First week of December | Final rankings and merit list released by AMTI |
One important thing Senior level students do not appear in the Preliminary Test. They directly sit for the Final Test in October. For all other categories, clearing the Preliminary is mandatory before appearing in the Final.
A lot of students miss out on NMTC simply because of avoidable errors during registration. Here are the most common ones:
Waiting too long — Registration deadlines are strict. Inform your school well in advance so they have enough time to complete the process.
Wrong category selection — Always cross-check your class against the category table before submitting.
Incorrect file format — AMTI only accepts Excel format. Submitting in PDF or any other format will lead to rejection.
Missing payment details — The email to AMTI must include payment confirmation. Sending forms without payment details is incomplete submission.
Spelling errors in student details — Names and details must match official school records exactly.
NMTC registration is not complicated, but it does require your school to be proactive and organized. The moment you decide you want to participate, start the process talk to your school, make sure they are aware of the deadline, and follow up to confirm that the submission has gone through. Do not assume it will be handled automatically.
The mathematics part of NMTC is challenging enough on its own. The registration part should never be the reason someone misses out. Stay on top of it early, get it done right, and then put all your energy into preparing for the exam itself.
