Association of Mathematics Teachers of India (AMTI) organises the National Mathematics Talent Contest (NMTC) annually. One of the oldest and most highly regarded mathematics competitions in the nation, it has been in operation since 1968. The NMTC is designed to examine non-routine problem solving, logical reasoning and mathematical creativity, which are not evaluated on school exams. Why Practicing Stage 1 Papers Actually Helps

Many students download previous papers but don't use them properly. These are the elements that really matter:

• Attempt first, solutions later: Give yourself a 2-hour time limit, and try to do the entire paper without any assistance. Only open the solutions once you are done. This will provide you with an accurate view of your current position.
• Learn how to do the method: Work through each solution step by step, particularly those you were incorrect on. Emphasize the logic and process rather than only the final answer.
• Record where you are making your mistakes: Patterns will start to emerge. Topics that you always lose marks for are your weak topics – study them, don't avoid them.
• Practice speed and accuracy together: Stage 1: Negative marking; 2 hrs limit. Practiced on a time limit, you can develop an instinct to go through a question or to skip it.

Stage 2: What Comes After Stage 1

Students who have ranked in the top 10% in NMTC Stage 1 are eligible to appear in NMTC Final Test (Stage 2). Stage 2 is a 3 hours, 100% subjective question paper, without any MCQs, without any fill-in-the-blanks. All questions should be answered in a step-by-step and complete manner. Partial marks are awarded for correct reasoning even if the answer is incorrect so showing working clearly is important, as much as getting the correct answer.

How to Prepare for Stage 2 After Clearing Stage 1

The preparation approach for NMTC Stage 2 needs to be different from Stage 1. What really counts:

• Always provide full solutions: When you get to the Stage 2 evaluators, they will be looking at your reasoning, not just your answer. Work clearly — a student who expounds on his/her reasoning will always do better than one who simply states a number.
• There are areas of greatest depth in Stage 2, such as number theory, combinatorics, and geometry. Cover modularity, pigeonhole principle, circle properties, geometric inequalities and polynomial identities.
• Develop Stage 1 solutions: Ideas from the Stage 1 are expanded on in the stage 2. Familiarizing yourself with the Stage 1 solutions, particularly the questions you answered incorrectly, provides a solid basis for preparing for Stage 2 math olympiad questions.
• Make full 3-hour practice sessions: A 3-hour subjective exam isn't all about what you know, but definitely about how you can do it. Students who have not rehearsed for a full period may lose focus before the end of the period. Make it a habit of the day.
