International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics for Juniors (IOAA-Jr) 2025

IOAA-Jr is a prestigious event focused on developing the scientific thinking of young students ages 14.5 and younger. It inspires young people to learn astronomy and includes both physics and math. The IOAA-Jr is patterned after the senior IOAA but is designed for younger people. Young people from all over the globe are invited to take part, and the competition encourages them to be curious, think in depth, and work together. Being a separate contest from the IOAA for seniors, the junior version introduces these fields to younger students with opportunities for both studying and observation. You can expect the competition to take five days, with plenty of written, hands-on, and observational rounds.

What is IOAA-Jr?

The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics for Juniors (IOAA-Jr) is held each year to introduce students under 16 to astronomy and astrophysics and help them achieve outstanding results. This year’s edition of the summit will happen from October 18 to 25, 2025, in Piatra Neamț, Romania, coordinated by the Ministry of Education and Research of Romania and local organizations.

IOAA-Jr Overview

IOAA-Jr Exam structure of the event consists of 60% for the theoretical part and 40% for the sky observation segment. A thorough process is carried out, using exams and orientation camps within the country, which leads to the international event. The Olympiad lets young astronomers demonstrate their abilities and helps build relationships among youth from around the globe.
