IOAA-Jr is a prestigious event focused on developing the scientific thinking of young students ages 14.5 and younger. It inspires young people to learn astronomy and includes both physics and math. The IOAA-Jr is patterned after the senior IOAA but is designed for younger people. The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics for Juniors (IOAA-Jr) is held each year to introduce students under 16 to astronomy and astrophysics and help them achieve outstanding results. This year’s edition of the summit will happen from October 18 to 25, 2025, in Piatra Neamț, Romania, coordinated by the Ministry of Education and Research of Romania and local organizations.
IOAA-Jr Exam structure of the event consists of 60% for the theoretical part and 40% for the sky observation segment. A thorough process is carried out, using exams and orientation camps within the country, which leads to the international event. To apply, candidates must be born during or after 2009 and must currently not be enrolled in a university course. Participants must become members of their country’s team through the National Olympiad. You need to have some knowledge of mathematics and physics for school science. Applications are only accepted from students who meet the IOAA-Jr age and grade level requirements.
