NMTC Exam Pattern – Stages, Question Types, Marking Scheme & Preparation Guide

NMTC follows a two-stage exam pattern Stage 1 is a 2-hour Preliminary Test with objective and subjective questions, while Stage 2 is a 3-hour Final Test that is fully subjective with no negative marking. The top 10% of students from the Preliminary Test qualify for the Final, while Senior level students get direct entry into Stage 2. This guide covers the complete NMTC exam pattern including question types, marking scheme, category-wise breakdown, and what to focus on while preparing.

NMTC Exam Pattern

Understanding the NMTC exam pattern is one of the most important parts of preparation. When you know exactly how the exam is structured — how many stages there are, what type of questions come, how marking works, and what the difficulty level looks like you can plan your preparation in a much more focused way. Without this clarity, students often end up spending time on the wrong things. This guide breaks down the entire NMTC exam pattern in simple, clear terms so you know what to expect before you walk into the exam.

What is NMTC?

Having a different competition every year, the National Mathematics Talent Contest (NMTC) Exam Pattern selects young talented students of mathematics in India and encourages them. Students of different academic levels have access to the exam and this is a great opportunity to give their minds a challenge in solving complex mathematical problems. The competition is a qualifier to other higher level math or like the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) and this is a qualifier to higher level international math competitions.

NMTC exam pattern is further subdivided into two major stages:

  • Stage 1: Preliminary Test
  • Stage 2: Final Stage

NMTC Exam Overview

The National Mathematics Talent Contest is conducted every year by the Association of Mathematics Teachers of India (AMTI). It is open to students from Class 5 all the way up to graduation level. The exam is not about memorizing formulas or solving standard textbook problems it is designed to test how well a student can think through unfamiliar mathematical situations and arrive at solutions using logic and reasoning.

Stage of NMTC

The NMTC consists of two phases: The initial round, the Preliminary Test, entails objective and subjective questions, and will be employed as the method of short listing candidates. The Final Round, or the second stage, is a highly descriptive exam that challenges high abilities in mathematics thinking and solving problems among Stage 1 best performers.

NMTC Exam Pattern

The NMTC exam is a two-stage examination namely Preliminary and Final. The Preliminary Test is a 2-hours examination having both objective and subjective questions with negative marking. The Final Test is a three-hour descriptive paper with no negative marking, both to the Stage 1 qualifiers and direct entrants of the Senior Group.

NMTC Exam Pattern
Level Class Group Paper Type Duration Marks
Primary Class 5 & 6 Written 2 Hours 100
Sub-Junior Class 7 & 8 Written 2 Hours 100
Junior Class 9 & 10 Written 2 Hours 100
Inter Class 11 & 12 Written 2 Hours 100
Senior UG (BA/BSc/BTech, etc.) Written + Interview 3 Hours (Written) + Viva 100 + Interview

Additional Notes:

  • Language: English (usually); translation of the Hindi/regional languages is accepted in some centers.
  • NMTC Syllabus: Is based on the school syllabus but it emphasizes on solving problems and log learning.
  • Stages: Generally performed in two sets of stages ready-made- Preliminary and Final at certain levels.

NMTC Stage 1 - Preliminary Test

The Preliminary Test is the initial step of the NMTC exam pattern and it is a qualification round of the Final Test. The Preliminary Test will be taken by all the students excluding students of the Senior group (Course: 11 and 12).

Stage 1- Initial Test:

  • Exam format: Objective (MCQ) mixed and subjective questions
  • Time: 2 hours
  • Negative Marking: YES (objective+numerical)
  • Purpose: To have shortlisted students on final stage

Eligibility

  • Primary Group: 5th 6 th grades
  • Junior Group: 7th & 8th, 9th & 10th
  • Senior Group: 11th & 12th class students who go directly to Final Test.

Examination mode

  • Offline: The test is conducted in participating schools.
  • Duration: 2 hours.

Format:

  • Objective Questions: Fill-in-the-blank questions, multiple choice questions (MCQs).
  • Subjective Questions: Short-answer questions which involve detailed solutions.

Difficulty Level

  • 20% of the questions will be of moderate difficulty, while 80% of the questions will be challenging and require an in-depth understanding of mathematical concepts.

Negative Marking

  • Objective Questions: There will be a deduction of 0.5 marks with incorrect answers in the objective questions.
  • Questions based on Numbers: The failure to provide the right responses in questions based on numbers will lead to a loss of 0.25 marks.

With this system of negative marking, one is forced to assess the questions properly and therefore has less chances of guessing them all.

Selection Process

  • Candidates who perform exceptionally high in Stage 1 will then be short-listed into the Final Test (Stage 2). The short list will consist of the top 10 % of the total candidates.
  • Those students that will pass to Stage 2 shall be issued with certificates that will also be used as a hall ticket during Final Test.

Number of Questions

  • The Preliminary Test is made up of objective and subjective questions. Depending upon the category of the candidate, the number of questions posed are different:
NMTC Preliminary Test – Number of Questions
Group Class Level Total Questions Objective Questions Subjective Questions
Primary 5th & 6th 25 15 10
Junior 7th & 8th 30 15–20 10–15
Intermediate 9th & 10th 30 15–20 10–15
Senior 11th & 12th 30 15–20 10–15

NMTC Stage 2 - Final Test

The second and concluding step of NMTC exam pattern is deemed as the Final Test and it is one in which the eligible candidates appear following qualification through Stage 1, along with senior school students (Class 11 and 12) who do not have to pass Stage 1.

Overview

  • Format: fully descriptive, problem solving
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Negative Marking: No
  • Eligibility: Pre-selected members and direct candidature of Senior Group (Class 11 to 12)

Eligibility

  • Stage 1 Qualifiers: The best 10% in Stage 1 have a chance to be played in Stage 2.
  • Seniors: The students of Class 11 and 12 have a direct chance to appear in Stage 2 without appearing in Stage 1.

Examination mode

  • Offline: The Final Test is organized in registration centers.
  • Time: 3 hours.

Format:

  • Subjective Questions: These involve elaborate problem solving questions whose solutions bare steps.
  • It is in this stage when the questions elicited will seek to examine the logical and analytical skills of the candidates.

Evaluation

  • The scripts of the answers are marked by Association of Mathematics Teachers of India (AMTI) experts.
  • The candidates are required to give answer papers on the day of examination.

Selection Process

  • The candidates with the highest rank of stage 1 and all students who are in senior level will have a chance to appear in the Final Test.
  • In December, following a careful assessment, the outcomes of Stage 2 will be published.

  • Practice at improving your speed without sacrificing preciseness.

Conclusion

The NMTC exam pattern is straightforward once you understand it two stages, each with a clear purpose and a clear format. Stage 1 filters students through an objective-heavy paper with negative marking. Stage 2 goes deeper with a fully subjective paper that rewards genuine mathematical understanding. Knowing this structure helps you prepare smarter you know what to practice, how to manage time, and what to prioritize in each stage.

The exam is challenging by design, and that is exactly what makes it worth preparing for. Students who put in the right kind of practice past papers, Olympiad problems, and strong fundamentals will always have a clear advantage going in.
